Sticky question.... i have a 3.0L and $4K. What to do?

Hi guys, a dream situation. I received 4K that wasnt planned.... so i MUST spend it right? on a Porsche related way, right? so....

I have a 1978SC 3.0L, leak-free, strong pullling good but not documented. I dont know if it has been rebuild or not. What should i do?

1) Upgrade de 3.0L
a) supercharged?
b) oversized?
c) SSI, exhaust and the usual way?

2) Sell the 3.0L, go 3.2 or 3.4 or 3.6?

Lemme know your thoughts. Thanks!

SSIs and a monty muffler will get you 15+ HP, improve the heating, and make it sound real nice, n'est ce pas?

Hi John, already have a Bursh exhaust and my heater system goes very well, merci!

I thought of the usual SSI’s set-up, but between the SSI’s set-up and a 3.2 w/Chip, whats best? Thanks!

can you get a 3.2 for $4K canadian? not really a huge difference in horsepower between the 3.0 and 3.2, plus 3.2s have valve guide problems, requiring a valve grind, which can cost $3K US. i would keep the 3.0.

Ok, then what to do with it? Does it worth going the cam way toward the subtle SSI´s upgrade? not too keen opening the case (crank/rods) but could face a cam/head job.

Thanks!

Your engine sounds ok already.

Personally, I would spend the money on suspension improvements and driving school.

Farleyd,
Perhaps a nice set of performance cams? I have heard that early 911S cams and especially early 906 cams really perk up a 3.0L engine. Since I am an early 911 enthusiast running Weber carb's on both of my cars, I don't know what you would need to do with your fuel injection system in order to switch to hotter cams?

I would go with the SSI's and muffler. The rest will quickly disappear on fixing all the things that need fixed on a 25 year old car. Things like struts, shocks, rubber bushings.

Blau you can't run cams that wild on a cis car becaust the high over lap cause some reverse pulses, screwing with the fuel metering flap.
I think i posted this before, or it sounds familiar but for that money why not buy one of the cheap turbo bolt on kits. 40-60% increase is some major cojones in that car but not enough to cause other $$$$ mods.

1fastredsc,
Thanks for the info on hot cams and CIS.
Well, here's another reason to stick with the early 911's: Weber carb's. They allow you do many modifications with your engine, without creating major induction problems.

save the money until you really need it.. and you will!

damn sorry guys, my mom got onto my computer. time to change the password.

Why not sell your engine and get a 3.6? That should be doable for a 4k difference. But of course, you will have to be the one doing the work! :D 4k is a lot of dough, OTOH, if it comes to messing with the flat 6 it unfortunately isn't that much any more!

I'd stick with SSI and keep the rest for other areas where you might need improvements!
