Source for oversized main bearings?
 

Hi all,

I’ve just started a complete rebuild of my SC 3.0 engine.

Unfortunately, I have found out that the main bearing bores are out of round and also out of spec.
That’s why I’m going to have the case align-bored to the next larger size.

The guy from the machine shop told me that bringing it back to its original size will be even more expensive than just enlarging the bores and putting the oversize bearings in it, although the bearings cost 760 € (about 910 $ at the moment). No kidding.

So I hope that any of you knows a dealer in US, where I can get the bearings cheaper.

In another thread you wrote about a shop that bought all of these oversized bearings and sells them for 500 $ a set. This would be a real snip for me.
There’s also something about Ollie’s (think this is the shop you are talking about?) and Zim’s which are said to take 200-300 bucks for a set.

Do you or anyone else have an email-adress of these shops? I’m not sure if my English is good enough for a phone call.

You can have your case machined back to spec for €672 by a company in germany (www.ahnendorp.de). Seems to be more econical than using oversized bearings. BTW the prices I have seen on over and undersized bearings here in Europe are mad. Compare them with Pelicanparts first!

thanks for your answer. I've already heard of this shop.

But another problem with bringing it back to original spec is: I've calculated, that there must be taken away an amount of 1.2mm from each case half to bring the bores back to a diameter of 65mm in vertical direction.

And this will lead to the piston crowns getting quite near to the cylinder heads.

The prices for undersized bearings in Germany are not higher than for the original ones (about 160 €), but there seems to be absolutely no chance to get oversized ones anywhere, not even at Pelican Parts.

Well that might create some problems, better that the more experienced rebuilders answers this.
On the bearing price however, mittelmotor for instance quotes
€399 for a set of .25 undersize main bearings which can be had from our host at €70,- Same applies for standard no* bearings.

As far as I know, Mittelmotor's prices for non-standard bearings are the prices for genuine Porsche parts.

Here at Theimann's it's 120 € + VAT.

I've already got a few adresses from the Elfertreff-forum here in Germany.

I'll try these first on Monday, but no one can tell if they got the bearings I need.

Read the engine rebuild book for more info on resizing the case, and why it is a good idea...

I've read the book twice now, and I think it's really fantastic.
Without it I wouldn't have started this DIY rebuild.

But after talking to several machine shops, comparing prices and thinking about it for two weeks, I've made up my mind and have come to this decision.

And now I'm trying to keep the costs as low as possible for this way.

BTW, don't you think that 1.2 mm on each case half is pretty much?
