2.7 oil leak

I have oil dripping out the "nose" (pulley) seal area; this is noted enven when the engine has not been run for several weeks; the engine has only a few thousand miles on it, but 3 race weekends are in that count.

when putting in my order for new seals (at Pelican, of course) I noted that there are 3 different seals listed (not counting the oversize ones); the deal here is that my crank & rods are originally from a 2.4 and I used an upgraded 7R case; i note that certain years 2.7 have a different seal listed and also that there is an "inside #8 brg" seal;

i ordered them all since i like to have an inventory at hand when the engine comes down and i'm hundreds of miles from any p parts sources, but .. are there pics in any manuals? (I have OEM 914/6 manuals but that would not clarify the 2.7 issue, & i also ordered Wayne's book)

the question is what seals should this thing actually have in it, and !)??

pulley seals

that's what is in there now.. but your online catalog lists different seal numbers & year ranges (K-113-290-41 for early 65-73, and BOTH K-113-290-41 & K-113-465-40 for the 74-77 2.7);

listed nose brgs are the same, A-101-138-03 and A-101-138-03 for both but the second seal is not listed or shown for the early engine

is the 2.7 case different than the 2.4 case in that area?

and the BIG question: am I likely able to R&R those seals by just dropping the nose of the motor ?

(this engine is in a 914/6)

Larry,

I don"t think there is any difference in the 2.4 to 2.7 cases in that area....its only in the webbings.

Did the seal or O ring got buggered on install? Did you have the case halfs plained/machined? You DID used the new thicker 3.0 seal?????

I know high mileage 3.0's develop a similar leak in that area when the original O ring gets hard/old. You can sometimes cheat and seal it up by smearing a special Permitex around the casting on the outside.

aha! i DID NOT know about the 3.0 seal option; is that info in Wayne's book which i am awaiting? what is the part number?

the leak is static (engine has not run for 6 weeks and oil draindown from the tank has filled the case); static drip appears to coalesce at the frontmost case bolt (front being a 914/6) and along the rib from the nose to the front of the oil drain plate, also drips from the bleed hole in the engine mount after the engine has run

case was an un-numbered 7R, checked over & timeserted by Ollie's in Santa Ana, followed by oil galley mod by German Precison; assembly was with loctite 574

i dropped the engine today; discovered a seriously worn ring gear problem on a flywheel that was bought NEW from Parts Heaven less than 3000 miles ago (i now suspect it was a fake oem part.. the TDC & timing marking on the fw was incorrect),, another $350 out the door

I am sure Wayne offers it also.

I would sure hate to pull a fresh motor apart.

quick update: NO leakage at the pulley seals; the wetness is below that around the intermediate-shaft cover; too bad i had to drop the engine to see that

Tinker,

Does moving up to the 3.0 #8 o-ring really make that big of a difference?
