Chaing Housing Removal Question...
 

Down the rebuild path & I'm in the chain housing removal stage and got a little stuck :(

Wayne's book already said that I may need to "destroy" the chain ramp so as to negotiate the removal of the chain housing (with CAM housing still firmly in place).

I did indeed got stuck & it looks like without the chain ramp, I can get the chain housing off. So the question is : how do I get the chain ramp off? Its held by 2 post but I'm reluctant to use any part of the housing as major leverage to force it out.

Any suggestions?

Slide hammer with claw fitting to slip behind the chain ramp; then a impact blow outward with slide hammer. This method loads only the ramp and the pins it mounts on. Jim

The ramps in the chain housing 'snap' onto their posts. You can use a flathead screwdriver and spread the plastic holding clip on the bottom on the ramp and slide the ramp out. Evident when you look underneath the ramp and see what holding it in place.

BTW: You'll need to remove the upper ramp on the right side to remove the housing, the left side housing can be removed w/ a little wiggling w/o removing the ramps. I would replace the ramps if they do show wear.

Small claw hammer works well too...

I just used channel locks to break it up piece by piece.

Thanks for the tips folks... I tried the flat screwdriver before but clearly didn't pry it open enough. With the reassurance that I'm on the right path, and the help of a vise grip, it came off fairly easy!

But of course, it will need to be replaced, as Wayne suggested :)

The ramps just clip into place. I just pry them off by applying pressure near the pin that has the clip.
