rebuild it or scrap it out?
Hey all,
Over the weekend I acquired a 2.7 that I'm considering stuffing into my '66 912 project (the original 1.6 engine was hosed)... I wouldn't have picked up this particular 2.7 except for the fact that the former owner made me an offer I couldn't refuse... but it's all apart and in boxes and the crankshaft is stuck (yep, won't budge)... if I replace the main & conn rod bearings, I'll still have to find new camshafts (they sold the originals on ebay), upper cooling shroud, alternator, induction and exhaust systems, flywheel and clutch... all the studs seem to be there and solid... but egads... Here's the big question: What's the concensus among my educated brethren? dump it as parts or take it on as a big project? based on what I've mentioned, any ideas out there on what I'll pay? _c |
oh, BTW...
The pistons and cylinders look great- the cross-hatching is still visible... I'm puzzled at a single broken ring with no apparent cylinder damage tho...

I am no expert, but I do remember having read a post where the ring was broken and the cylinders undamaged. Common sense would tell me this is a rare occurance. I wonder, was the broken ring still seated on the piston? If it were, you just dodged a big one. Again, I am no expert on this subject. |
the missing link, er, ring...
Half of the broken ring in still in the groove, half is nowhere to be found... I suspect someone got careless after it was all apart. I was quite amazed that neither the pistons or the cylinders showed any signs of galling at all.
go figure! (but maybe lucky for me, eh?) _c |
