Fan removal from alternator

Having trouble getting the fan off of the alternator. Seems to be on there really good! Waynes book says its a press fit. I have supported the fan around its lip and was going to tap it down. Is this the right way to do it? And it looks like there is a small "key" on the shaft does it need to somehow come out first?

Take some wood and stack on either side of the alternator, fan side up, give yourself 3-4" of drop space under the alternator and put some good padding for the alternator to drop on to. Now pick up the fan about 6-10" and drop. Repeat until the alternator drops off the fan. No need to remove the key and even if you did it would not help.

Finally got this darn thing off! Didn't like the idea of dropping it, seemed like it would be easy to break a blade that way and the bearings of the alternator would get stressed on each drop. I supported the lip of the fan on wood blocks then soaked the shaft with PB penetrant overnight, then used a torch to heat the fan collar, then using an 8mm allen socket in the shaft I tapped it hard with a hammer and it eventually came free.
