So, is this what 2.7RS pistons look like?
I received a set of Mahle 2.7RS p/c's (8.5:1) for Christmas and, when I looked them over, I was expecting them to appear different. From a pic I've seen in Frere's book (pg 46), and from my shop manual, I was expecting a much higher dome and deeper pockets. The dome on these pistons is only a couple of mm's. Am I obsessing over size? Thanks!

Jim,
Even the 2.2'S dome looks small for 9.8:1. The only think that looks "good" to me is a set of 10.5:1 JE's that I've seen. (I might be running then if my new job comes through). I really suprised when I first saw pics of those too. |
Yep, they're supposed to look like that. 8.5:1 is nothing.

Jim:
u lucky dog! I should be able to get a comparable picture tomorrow in our shop. Santa brought me a nice new digital camera and I'll be snapping lots of photos. Will get back 2 u . So... when is the engine drop???? Jason |
They are indeed, low compression pistons...

They look the same a mine, not a very high dome, but 8.5 isn't that much.

Wow, I'm so surprised. They really look underwhelming. I guess all that really matters is the HP after I upgrade my 73E engine to RS specs. Thanks guys for your great feedback!

Jim - looks good. So are you going to have these installed and ready to go for the first DE ?
|
Aaah, no. They will have to sit in their box until that last 2004 DE. Then they can come out and play.

Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat ? I'll put $1 down right now that says sometime prior to next winter those puppies are in! As you know, you have some pretty persuasive friends here in NoVa :)

LOL, guess he really meant what he said :D
|
Yep! :D

It's getting close to winter...

Jim - is it just the picture or is that rust on the top of the lower studs?
|
Doug, there is a little corrosion on the threads
