'74 2.7 Parts in a 2.4T
I checked out a 74 2.7 engine at a shop which was pulled for a swap. Wrench said engine was running in car before swap. He also said the price (around $750) was a bargain simply for the internals as they could be put in a 2.4 and make it close to an 2.4S. Perhaps the knowledgable Pelican Brotherhood could explain to me why this would be so and if it was worth it. What 74 2.7 internals do you put in the 2.4T case to make so hot. . . or is it a load of BS to sell a used engine?

BS. The internals in the 2.4 and the 2.7 are exactly the same. The only change is in the pistons and cylinders. Even the oil pump is not the upgraded one...

What Wayne said. BS. Even the heads, cams and cam housing are basically the same. If the 2.7 is a 2.7 normal then the heads have basically the same porting and the cams have virtually the same profile as a 2.4T MFI cam albeit slightly retarded to run with CIS pistons. The cam housing is exactly the same.
When you think about the 73.5' 2.4T CIS and the 74' 2.7 CIS (normal) are virtually the same motor with the exception of the displacement. |

I was thinking of doing this and gathered some E cams and new 2.7 pistons and am looking for cylinders now...is this even worth it or is there somthing else I should be looking at to get an honest 175-190 HP? Brian |
You can make 175 easy out of a 2.4. Search for tyson's 2.4 dyno sheet. He's making 185 at the flywheel and that was on a budget. A 2.7 will have more torque though and with the right set of induction/cams/pistons can make 210HP easy.
I'm currently building a high compression 2.4 E motor and hoping for 180. |
There's no reason not to upgrade to 2.7 - providing your case is adequately machined and straight.

So if I read this thread correctly, I can just put new 2.7 P&C's in my 2.4T engine case, upgrade the injection system to the 2.7 CIS, maybe a more agressive cam and I'm done??

Yes you can do that but the nature of the CIS injection restricts overall performance. If you're going as far as replacing cylinders and cams why not replace your injection with weber carbs for about 1000-1200 and get some serious horsepower. You can make between 210 and 230 with S cams and a CR of 9.5:1 as compared to 180ish or less with the CIS. |

if I'm going to do the P&C's replacement (and cams) I may go with the Megasquirt injection (I have the electronic kit already).. of course Webers are always a good alternative... |
Run with JE's at 9.5:1 or so, and run with an 'S' camshaft - that will give you a very good setup for use with the MegaSquirt. I would avoid the CIS pistons, cams, and injection if you don't need to pass smog...

OK this is getting interesting... what about valves and camshaft housing? can I still use the same from the '73.5?

The valves and cam towers are exactly the same between the 2.4 and 2.7. The ports maybe different though depending on what you need and what you've got.

Port size, got your 'usual/standard' port sizes for a 73 with CIS.. I guess 35mm (don't have manuals handy)

hmm.. I belive the "standard" size was 32mm and 35mm for the S spec 2.7's. My 72T motor had 29mm ports so maybe yours are that small?

Tim, I'm sure you are correct.. I'm in the middle of a business trip in California and I don't have any manuals or books handy. I will double check during the weekend... but in any case resize the ports should not be a big issue .. aside from having to need new SSI's... :-(

Why would you need new SSI's? I seriously doubt you'd be making enough HP to need a larger set of SSI's

Tim, you are correct (again).. I will not be changing the towers .. don't know what I was thinking (nothing probably)... brain f@rt about the thick/thin flanges for the SSI's between '73 and '74.
