Header Bent? / Engine Holder Fit Question
 

When I tried to mount the P201 engine holder on the right side of the case the flange where the right and left headers join was cleary in the way if I tried to slide the holder over the transmission studs. The only way mounting was possible was if I removed the lower transmission stud put the P201 engine holder on then replaced the stud.
Is this the way its supposed to be or is my header possibly bent? (Car is an 87 930)

you have to carve a notch in the yoke. torch or sawzall. normal problem.

Thanks John... even though I was looking for an excuse to replace the Headers with some shiny GHL's or B&B's!

Wayne, you should probably add John's note about cutting the holder to your rebuild book "corrections" for the turbo. I actually ended up mounting the holder on the opposite 9left) side until I got the headers off, then supported the engine from underneath and switched it over on the stand.

Can someone post a pic of this problem?

Red arrow shows the flange. Blue arrow shows the transmission bolt. Its impossible to slip the holder over this bolt past the flange.

Note the picture shows the right side header removed already and the holder mounted on the opposite side. It was actually still difficult to the holder on this left side without pushing on the header pipe.

I had the same problem with my 1977 930. Had the engine hoisted ready to attach the engine stand yoke, and couldn't get it to fit with the cross over pipe, so I removed the cross over pipe before attaching the engine stand yoke. I had the advantage of a engine block and tackle though.

Here's a picture of the mod. This mod may already be present in the latest yokes. I think Chris Lovell's had this mod from the factory. Here are some pictures of the mod.

Well, just checked my holder and it has the notch as shown in Tedslicks picture, but there is no way it would have slid past the header flange. Maybe my header is a bit bent?.

I had the same problem before but didn't go through such detailed analysis as you did :(

I ended up mounting the engine temporarily using a regular yoke, remove the headers then remount it with the Porsche yolk.

Your post does intrigue me though - can this be a "variance" issue? Another friend of mine did the same thing recently on a 86 vintage & it fit w/o any issues
