I have finally got my engine completely dismantled due to a supposed rob bearing failure. After many silent prayers, and crossing every body appendage that is it possible to cross, I got to see the failed bearing.
Amazingly enough, it does not appear to have damaged the crankshaft. When I bought(rescued) the car, a 1978 SC coupe, I was told it had a bad rod bearing. He said it was not run after the noise developed. Once identified, the car was immediately shut off and towed. The bearing had in fact spun. Howewer, the crankshaft does not appear to have been effected. I does have marks similar to those described in Wayne's book resulting from dirty oil, but no tangible damage on that journal to be found. It passes the fingernail test, and appears to extremely fine scrathes with no "gouges" or significant scratches. Now after all that I will get to my point......What should I do now? I am tempted to clean the crank and prepare for a re-assembly. Does anyone think this not a good idea? I have seen many crankshaft executions while drag racing, but this is my first Porsche. Any insight you can give is greatly appreciated. Alas, Kudos to Wayne on a Fantastic book!!! I cannot imagine attempting a rebuild without it.

As Wayne said, at least have it accurately measured and polished. Just make sure the shop that does the polishing is able to REALLY clean out the oil galleys. 911 cranks are more difficult to clean due to the orientation of the galleys. To be really anal, there are 'lee' plugs that should be removed for cleaning and new one's pressed it afterwards.
Have a close look at the crank and you will see these tiny plugs.. |

i've seen journals that looked reasonably smooth after a rod bearing spun, and they measured 2 sizes under when measured.

Ohh myy ohhh mee do you realy want the plugs pulled out///!!!???if its turns out to be just a polish (I hope fo you) LEAVE the plugs in the crank and clean it out after with about 4 cans of brake clean and compresed air
