3.0 top oil leak and....
Well, it is not much to look at right now. There she is, the 3.0 911 air-cooled Porsche engine who is suffering from a case of the spins.
Two things here... as I tore down the engine, after the cowl came off, I noticed a rather thick layer of oil grime on top of the engine. There was no particular spot where the oil leak might have come from. Could it have been from where the oil breather line connects to the case? Could it have been from the case itself along the parting line? Is this a correctable leak? Second thing here... notice the white box behind the engine? Oh yes! SSI heat exchangers baby!! They arrived today. This is certainly one of the last items I will need for my re-build, but it does my heart good to know there will be free flow exhaust at the end of the tunnel!! Next item is a big thanks to Pelican for getting my tools order out to me so quickly this week. Wayne is right in his book, you certainly need the correct tools to do the job correctly! Pelican has everything you need in a quality product. I would have never attempted this without his book and this forum!! ![]() |

Thanks for the comments. The oil may have come from just about anywhere, like a bad breather hose to a leaky oil pressure sender.

Have fun. I was there not too long ago. Your engine looks typical with all the oil sludge.

Looks almost identical to what I found when I removed my shroud.
Have fun cleaning ... lots of elbow grease was required !

I will certainly second That,..The problem with doing a rebuild the first time by yourself is second guessing your ability,.and then the confidence of doing it right,So The book is a VERY,VERY helpful item for sure,.and then to be able to ask the same dumb questions is also reassuring LOL...Thanks agin Frank

Mine was the same way. In addition to the crank case breather and oil pressure sender, it could be coming from the thermostat o-ring.
