Completed shortblock (65 911) reassembly--by the book(Waynes and Haynes) yesterday. Unfortunately, discovered an omission in assembly--a couple of screens that attach to the interior of the case-- Can't imagine what these 1/8th inch screens are designed to catch-- they secure by metal tabs in the vicinity of the oil pump/pickup tube. (The oil pickup has it's fine mesh screen). What function did these screens serve? My inclination is to move forward, but prudence requires I fess up and seek sage advise. Any observations?? It's the internal baffles that were used on early motors - most people don't install them - Porsche phased them out on the later motors.

Of course, if that is what you are referring to. Please post a pic...

I'm VERRY aware of those screens. They weren't in the later motors but in my 72T engine I had one disintergrate spewing little bits everywhere.. not good. I'm leaving them out of my new engine.

Yes, chalk up another data point for "Left Them Out" here too. Now if you left out the green oil pump seals, that's another story...

Wayne, Tim, & Dave Thanks for your replies--Wayne, we're talking about the same items, I'm wondering as to the engineering logic behind their inclusion in the early models? They are horizontally positioned so oil making it's way to the sump would pass through them--no way to clean/remove them--perhaps to baffle,rather than strain..... Ich weise nicht. Tim--now thats not good--looks like v/hard metal. And Dave, green ones?? They're in---I believe we can be forgiven---I believe,neither book, or waynes first print addendem, addresses this
particular part inclusion/exclusion. Part of a dying breed, I'm sure. Thanks to all--now to press on. Steve

I belive the reason that they're in is to keep the crankshaft/moving parts from moving through a cloud of oil. aka keeping the oil cloud down into the layshaft area where it doesn't rob as much HP.

edit: the way the screen accomplishes that is by separating out oil droplets

Where in N. Idaho? I grew up in St. Maries, and to this day I consider Lake Coeur d' Alene to be one of the most pleasant places on earth...in August.

Right - it acts more like a baffle to keep the vapor cloud down. Of course, I don't think it worked very well, as the factory canned it...

Tim & Wayne, interesting--wouldn't think displacing oil would result in HP loss (of any magnitude), but I'm sure it's a factor. (nothing a few more cc of displacement wouldn't overcome--the brute force technique)

Thats Buehl country, correct?? Am originally from Clarkston--35 yr ago (or more) our HS football team would go through St. Maries (on the way to Kellogg/Wallace--) We'd lunch at a very old 2/3 story hotel there--a very sleepy town (except for Fri/Sat nites probably) Have been in Sandpoint for 25+years--still very nice but, am glad I have recollections of days of old (waxing nostalgic) Greatgrandparents homesteaded in Coeur d' Alene at the turn of the century--so haven't ventured too far--(must like small town lifestyle) Regards Steve L
