Looks Ugly
My pcar has 140k on the ticker. When the day finally comes that I have to rebuild, I will need a priest and a lot of help and encouragement from the brotheren (pelicanheads). I have gotten the basics, but I must say the big stuff looks pretty ugly!

John, my '86 had 133,000 when I did a case up rebuild over the winter. I had ZERO 911 rebuild experience, although I had rebuilt other engines. I now have about 1500 miles on the rebuild and it is running strong. Of course I had this board to come to when I had questions!

It ain't rocket engineering. Having the correct information, proper tools and gauges and subletting work like the heads and crank inspection are the keys. During some phases having a helper is also very useful. The hardest part is all the cleaning. Jim

Although I have no major problems (oil leaks, smoking, low compression, etc.), I just want to get, as you have all said already, prepped for the possibilty it could happen sooner rather than later.
Wayne, I will buy the book as you have suggested. You know... I'm always inspired by the newbie that successfully tears his 915 trans down and repairs the broken gears and syncros the first week he has the car, saving himself thousands of dollars and walking away with the satisfaction in knowing he can fix just about anything on his new love--the pcar! Thank god for all those that contribute to this site! Truly, we are all brothers that share a common passion. ![]()

Bird. It's the word...
|
I started the beginings of my rebuild 12 months ago with the purchase of the engine book, followed by a junked 2.7 (so I didn't have to take my car off the road), I then started buying up gaskets, sealers, tools etc... 6 months ago, and finally started sending stuff off to the machinist 3 months ago. Basically if you spread it out it doesn't seem as expensive, and it's easier to "launder" the budget and hide stuff from the Chief Finance Minister (wife)
![]() Speaking of brothers... mine will be relieving me of the current 2.0 in my car now for use in his latest aircraft. You'd think a professional/commercial pilot would have better things to do with his spare time!
