Newbie engine builder question
 

Hi all,

I have a 2.2S engine sitting in my garage/shop. It came out of a 911 race car with under 8 hours on it after a rebuild. Well, since it was swapped out for a 2.7, I have this engine ready to install in my car.

So, I'm new to 911 engines, and this one is missing quite a few parts, ie fan, alternator, fan shroud, misc sheet metal(?), and most important, carbs.

What carbs should I use? I will probably get some used ones and rebuild them myself. what should I be looking for? I found some zenith carbs in the classifieds for a good deal. What about webers?

Webers are basically the standard these days. I don't think they used Zeniths on the 2.2S, althought I'd have to check to make sure. It's easier to find the proper jets and parts for the Webers to set them up for your 'S' engine these days...

I think your engine had MFI. I'd go with wayne on webers though. Safe bet. Another thought are the new FI systems out there for older engines that are completely progrmable and will cost less than a new set of webers.

Slightly misleading. First of all, you can't get new Webers. You may be referring to PMO carbs? Even with the fuel injection systems, you have to get yourself some throttle bodies which are not cheap either...

Yes, I was refering to PMOs. I believe they purchased either the rights or pattents to the weber IDAs and only that cab as weber still manufactures carbs. Also, at 2k+ the other systems can be cheaper (some include the throttle bodies) and should provide better hp, fuel economy and more reliable to boot!

You can modify Zeniths to work on a 2.2S. PMO's or Webers would be a lot easier to source parts for though. MFI was stock on the 2.2S, but it's difficult (impossible?) to tune the MFI in a 914 unless the cars been cut a little bit. You could always bench tune the engine then just put it in. Either way, the 2.2S will be a blast to drive.

With all due respect, my BS meter is pegging. Back up what you are saying. First of all, Richard Parr's design of the PMO carburetor is a new design, loosely based on the Weber design. I know of no rights or "patents" that Richard acquired from Weber (which is now owned by another carburetor company).

On the EFI - show me a system that includes the throttle boddies for just over $2K. Post the URL here.
