Yes, but if the mechanic doesn't know what happened, then there is a likelihood that it may happen again...

Understood. Unfortunately if you happen to have an incompetent mechanic and he screwed up your engine, you are most likely screwed as well. Competent mechanics make mistakes, but fix them. Competent mechanics tend to listen to suggestions as well, especially if they are not certain of what went wrong. Incompetent ones tend to blame someone else, never listen, and sometimes don't care either. If you are unfortunate enough to have found a really bad one, the only recourse is usually legal. and then it may only be wishfull thinking that they will be able to pay for their incompetence. The only way to avoid getting one is to do all the normal stuff, referances,,, and even then some good ones have been known to fall on their head and start to do bad work.

would an xray of the parts on a rebuild help, especially pistons?

a magnaflux of the throw out brg fork, before re-install, isn't a bad idea

Hmm, if one piston failed, then they should all be carefully inspected, perhaps magnafluxed, as suggested.

Isn't it just cheaper to buy a new one?
