Are these dents too bad???
Aw crap......
Valves hit the pistons and dented them fairly good. What do you guys think, can I clean up the dents and leave the pistons alone or do they need to be replaced. This is not a race motor just used for DE's and street. Let me know your opinions.. Some people pay to get valve pockets like that cut into their pistons, and you got them for free. I'll bet your exhaust valve are trash though.
Good luck, JP |
You might want to make sure that the top ring groove was not distorted and that the top ring still has proper side clearance.

A friend of mine over-reved his engine and bent the valves. I didn't get a look at the pistons but he didn't touch them and just put the engine back together with new valve job. Engine has run fine for about 4 race weekends.
I would pull the pistons and clean them up and look for damage/wear. If they checkout OK then I would reuse them. |
I agree with Eagledriver. Your valves are junk. The pistons can likely be reused.

Check the piston carefully where the wrist pin meets. The rod pushing into the wrist pin, pushing into the piston, pushed them into the valves. There is another thread on this forum right now of a piston failure that may have been caused by an overrev like this...
