Question for Wayne
Wayne,
On page 89 (first paragraph) in your book on rebuilding the 911 engine you state..."If you are building a high-performance 2.0-liter engine, I recommend that you use a later model 2.2- or 2.4-liter head instead." I agree with this statement, but I have not been able to figure out how to put 2.2 heads on my 2.0 cylinders. The two engines have different methods for sealing the head to the cylinder. Can you make some suggestions on how to do this? Thanks, neilca |
The early 2.0 engines used a head gasket that fit between the cylinder and the head. The later ones used what is called a "CE" gasket to seal. In order to use the 2.0 cylinders on the later-style heads, you need to modify the head slightly, although off the top of my head, I can't remember what the exact parameters of this mod are. I know there's info in the archives here on this, I'll do a search.

Hmm, I can't find any useful information on this, and I can't remember what the mod is off the top of my head (it's not listed in the Engine Rebuild book).
Steve mentions that the 2.2 heads are a good option for increased performance on a 2.0L engine, maybe he could comment? -Wayne |
Okay, I did some more research on this. It's not as easy as it is implied in the Rebuild Book. In order to make the later style heads fit the 2.0 cylinders, you need a small "adapter piece" that acts as a gasket between the heads and the cylinder. I asked my technical editor for the book, and he said he had only seen this once, and didn't know of anyone who made one for this application.

What if you were to sleeve the 84mm cylinders and bore them to 80mm. Have you heard of anyone doing that? Thanks, neilca |
