Help: engine+transmission install 1972 T
 

Can anyone please provide me with a clear and detailed explanation of how I reconnect my 915 transmission to my engine before putting them both back in the car ?

Specifically, I'm concerned about getting the clutch fork seated correctly on the throwout bearing when the engine and gearbox mate. How does the fork fit on? Any knacks to getting it right?

Wayne's books don't offer clear guidance. Am I getting too hung up on it? I just don't want to get it wrong tonight and have to pull the engine again tomorrow!

When I did this first, I assumed that the forks pushed on the release bearing ("throwout bearing") from the back side. In reality, it pulls on the bearing, from its outer edge.

The release bearing's outer edge is a wide groove with raised edges. The ends of the fork fit into this groove. So, the fork could push or pull it.

As you mate the engine and tranny, both the long arm and the short arm on the outside of the bottom of the tranny should be laying on your bench. As you mate them together, rotate the fork shaft so that the fork grabs the release bearing groove. There are two holes in the tranny bellhousing that can be used to view the fork and groove, so you can visually verify that they are mating properly. Once the engine and tranny are back in the vehicle, then install the two arms.

i`ve mated a `83 eng to a old-styled 915 trann--the forks r in but with the old release lever --when i pull back on the lever --the t/o-arm pullsback on the t/o-bearing--thus going nowhere--QUESTION ITS APPEARS THAT THE T/O-ARM SHOULD BE PUSHING--WHAT SEEMS TOBE THE PROBLEM? DO I NEED TO CHANGED THE OLD FORKS&LEVER IN ORDER TO GET THE CLUTCH TO RELEASE PROPERLY? THANKS IN ADVANCE:confused:
