Any 1 find better hardware for flywheel bolts

Ive seen some different hardware to replace the barrel nuts on head studs . anyone seen better hardware than those dang 12 point insert freaking flywheel bolts.

The 12-point tool is designed so that you can put a large amount of torque on them without stripping them out. If you go to another fastener that isn't rated for this, you may have problems. They are also very low-profile bolts to clear the clutch components...

Tony,

The cost of these bolts and barrel nuts is so low that I do not see any savings in cost versus risk of working with something that Porsche did not design for. My opinion, buy the correct connectors from our host.

The bolts for the 9 bolt cranks ('78 on) are only $1.65 from Pelican but the 6 bolt cranks (pre-'78) are $8.25 each - expensive enough to make one consider alternatives.

I've always just replaced flywheel bolts but a friend of mine pointed out that these bolts are not stretch bolts and the factory manual doesn't say to replace them. I checked and wasn't until the 964 with its dual mass flywheel that the factory manuals specify that they should be replaced. Something to think about.

Im not talking about going to the hardware store and finding the same
thread pitch and psi rating ... Im talking about something like ARP head studs ect. Something in the raceware catagory and more user friendly.
I have taken three flywheels off in the last year and everyone of them had a couple bolts previosly stripped out..

From some previous owner who didn't use the proper tools. Trust me on this one, the 12-point star bolts, when used correctly are your best bet.

I've heard people go both ways on this. For my own personal engines, I've always used new ones...

I'm pretty sure ARP sells only application-specific bolts, a few of which are metric (like 911 cylinder head studs). You might have to go to the MIG store for better ones. That is, sources for aerospace or race-quality metric fasteners in the US is pretty thin.

Sherwood
