Cost of Twin Plugging?

Hi Gang,

I'm just throwing up some ideas in my head about the possibility of getting my Carrera Heads modified for a Twin Plug setup.

What does this upgrade typically cost in terms of machine work and what components would I require?

If it's not too expensive, I might get the heads done whilst they're off for the top end rebuild anyway.

The extra machine work costs around $3-400 (US) if you're having the heads done anyway. You will need to change your ignition advance (reprogram chip) and get a "splitter" box for the ignition ($5-600 US for the Andial one or make your own).

Merv,

Where are you? In NSW, call Richard at PR Technology (02 99056316) - he's done quite a few. But....

What is your application? Twin Plug arrangements work best with quite high compression ratios (i.e. >10:1) and high-domed pistons. If you don't have this it's probably not worth the $$$. Then you will have to engineer some sort of 12-plug dizzy with all the attendant drama - more $$$.

Hi Mark,

I'm in Melbourne.

My application is for a high HP turbocharged engine, running 930 3.3L Pistons & Cylinders and around 1.1-1.2bar of boost. Twin plugging is ideal for such a setup.

Merv,

Sounds like a cool project :) You might want to speak with Nick Sophios at Europesport (02 9693 5088) - he's done a bunch of big power turbos.

Hope it goes well for you.

Cheers,

Mark L.

Thanks Mark ;)

I've approached PR Tech and also Bob Whyms about the engine work, but I'll also contact Nick and see whether he's interested.

Is is cheaper to go the 964 distributor route or use something like Electromotive?

As I understand it, on a turbocharged car the 964 distributor isn't an option, there isn't room with the turbocharger plumbing.

good point!!

Ah, but this is a Custom turbo setup, for my 3.2 Carrera.

I don't have the space limitation issues the 930 guys have because the intake plumbing leading up to my IC is actually on the side of the motor, not at the front where the Dizzy is :D

Having said that, does anyone know how much the Andial Twin Plug conversion kit sells for? Looks like it contains everything needed to do the conversion.

I was quoted $800 AUD to get the heads prep'd for twin plugging. Good price??

A Porsche mechanic showed my his twin plug setup a few weeks ago in his 2.7. He used a 964 distributor, gutted the internals and replaced it with a Petronics pick-up and used a pair of MSD boxes.
