Autopsy of a 2.2S - 1st Discoveries
 

Early stages of teardown, and I noticed that the rocker shaft for the #2 Exhaust was going walkabout. The other end was still engaged, so no big deal, but I seem to remember the same thing from the last valve adjust last summer.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1080586206.jpg

Then after the heads came off, you can's really tell from the picture, but the top of the valve is shiny - like wire brushed aluminum - from contact with the piston. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1080586410.jpg

At first I thought the rocker shaft was the cause, but now I think the valve contacting the piston rattled the shaft out of position instead. This picture shows that the exhaust valves from both #1 and #2 were making contact.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1080586511.jpg

A few months after I rebuilt this motor, I was still having trouble getting the MFI dialed in, so I took it to a local shop. The owner mentioned that the cam timing for the left side was off and he had to adjust it before tuning the MFI, so I assumed I had cludged the rebuild work (still a valid assumption) and told him to go ahead. Does this look like it was caused by incorrect valve timing? Even with no valve contact on #3?
