3.3 turbo crank question

ive just had my 3.3 turbo crank checked and it spun a bearing. the guy at the shop says that the damaged journal is 18 thou smaller than the good ones. as far as i know the crank has never had a grind. can it be saved? is 18 thou too much to come off a journal?

too much. that's almost 2 undersizes, and the wear will not be exactly centered on the journal, so it will not even clean at 2 undersizes. junk crank.

that's 0.45mm too small. I don't see bearings for 0.50mm undersized for turbo applications. YMMV

edit: looks like JW beat me to the punch.. he knows what he's talking about.

I think the 3.3 and the 3.2 crank are the same, but don't quote me on that.

thanks Julian, can anyone verify this?

same

The gear for the distributor is different, so you would need to check that you have the appropriate one for your application.

there is always the option of having it welded up and reground to standard. crankshaft specialists in memphis tennessee is one place that can do it, but shipping from england would probably nix that idea.

I spun a bearing like you, and opted for the regrind, my damage was minimal. I sent it to Ted Robinson at German Precision in CA, he also rebuilt my heads, did a fantastic job.
I know how much it costs for Porsche parts in the UK, I,m from Wales, I would contact Josh Sadler at Autofarm he will know somebody who maybe able to help you.
