Case Sealer

Has anyone tried/used 3M 3Bond for their case? I've been told a few people in my club have been using it with great results.

Thanks

I've heard of people (Andial on 962's) using it on the cam carriers but not the case.

I used what Wayne recommends in his book (574? the orange stuff) and it did the job for me on my rebuild.

This subject will be debated forever...

Here's what Gunnar Racing uses....

Wayne's right, my intention wasn't to go over old ground, I'd just never heard of 3Bond.

Chris, funny you brought up Gunnar Racing's preference as I had saved this page for reference myself! Who makes the stuff?

My intention in the absence of any "rave reviews" of another product is to go with the Loctite 574

Cheers

I'd like to point out that the requirements for a case sealant on a race engine with a 20 hour life may be slightly different from the sealant used on a street engine that will go 100K plus miles. I can see how Hylomar would make the next rebuild a little easier. Hylomar and Curl-T are basicly different brands of the similar non-hardening sealant. For the record, I stick with 574.

John,
Seeing has no one has really answered your question.....

First, I'm sure ThreeBond® is not a 3M product. It can be made in either Japan or USA by the (who else) ThreeBond Co. There are a few different ThreeBond formulas. I'm familiar with the 1104.

ThreeBond 1104 a Hylomar-type product. I did not use it on my 911 engine ( I used the Loctite 574 on the cam towers, mostly because I was given some at no cost and wanted to try it.) I use 1104 on all the air-cooled m/c engine work I do.
It's one of the few sealants I've tried, that will stop the leaks of a 60-ish Triumph or Norton motor. So, it should work well on a Porsche too.

I might add that John Walker likes to use Dirko, another Hylomar-based sealant. So I think it's proven there are other products that will work besides Loctite 574.

In reference to the Gunnar pictures of Hylomar. Isn't Hylomar blue? The green in the pictures sure looks like Curil-T doesn't it?

The ThreeBond 1104 stuff is also known as "Yamabond". I'm guessing it was a Yamaha factory sealant at one time.

I agree 100%. Sealant for racing engines is not the same as sealant for engines that will run 100K miles. I also think that racing engines often leak oil as standard operating procedure? :)

Thanks Doug for the product info... I didn't realise it was a separate brand. I had heard of Yamabond though.

I think I will stick with the 574 on this occassion.

Thanks for all the responses.
