porsche tool rental

I am not planning on doing this for a living, so I tried to see if any pelicans were of the same mindset, you know, sell tools they may not use for 5+ years. NO luck. So, now I want to see if anyone knows of a place where I can rent these tools for my 911 top end rebuild. Anyone?

I can understand you're reluctant to purchase specialty tools. You can always sell them when you're done on eBay. A used engine yoke goes for close to what a new one is. This way, you can take your time, and not worry about renting.

So, is there someone out there who will buy these puppies and save a few beans once I am through?

Perhaps the Pelicans can start a tool shed where we have the basic Porsche tools and borrow them like we do books in the library. You could pay something to be in the group and then have borrowing privileges. Do you think such a set up would fly?

It would probably work well in SoCal but not sure for the rest on the country. Excellent idea though!

Doug, since you are in DC maybe we should get the locals together and see what we can do.

I don't know why you would have to be in SoCal to do a tool shed. UPS shouldn'g cost that much to send tools around the country. Mark, I am prety close to you... in Columbia. Are you active in the local PCA stuff?

Lost touch but trying to regain it. I put an offer out to whom ever wanted to come over and see what I am doing. No luck so far. We are in different regions. Maybe that makes a difference?

Mark,

What are you doing on you car? I would like to take a look. Had a '69 911 from 1985 to 1995... then without one until 2 yrs ago. Now I have a '77 with a 3.0L... just love it. Daily driver into DC regularly. I wrench it but I am a little rusty.

Doing a top end rebuild. Seals and small items on the transmission. And of course lots of hoses, clutch, cltch cable, etc. I'jj be on it this weekend. Bring your torch if you plan on coming

I was able to find a member from my local Porsche Club who is lending me the engine holder and cam tool. Local was the way to go for me.

This is a troubling thread. While I can see the desire to save money, skimping on tools from the outset is a bad way to begin your approach to your rebuild. I have found that most people who don't use the proper tools (or don't have the proper mindset for getting and using the tools) usually end up with an inferior rebuild, because they skimped on something else.

The stock response I have for this is that there is a healthy used market for rebuild tools (more-so since the Rebuild Book came out). You can probably buy the tools and sell them on eBay our our BBS and recover 80-90% of your cost. Much easier than renting...

I agree with Wayne. Unless you're a driven person the rebuild will most likely take much longer than you might think. So many people want the engine yoke for example that it will be very easy to unload it when you're done. I buy the tools as I go. They really are a small cost of the rebuild.
Example; I have about 3000.00 so far in my rebuild and about 350.00 in unique tools.
From your post, and many other like it, it's apparent that no-one wants to unload Porsche tools.
I'll probably keep mine when I'm done and loan it out to friends.
