Rebuild finish with only three bolts and linkage left... Need help identifying them.

Hi Y'all,

I have a 1984 911 3.2 Cab RoW. I have finished the rebuild and am at the point of putting the engine and transmission back into the car.

I have these bolts and linkage left:

The bolts I think all go to the compartment that got lost moving the car between Austin and Houston three weeks ago. Here is the compartment that is missing (anyone know a part number for this?)

The linkage is what really has me stumped. I know I must be missing more of the linkage (again lost between Austin and Houston) since it will not reach from the transmission to the side throttle lever.

Here is where it would attach to the 915 transmission:

It also does not resemble the pelican part number for the linkage rod (C423-043-00).

Here is the rod that the books shows goes here.

My only guess is this linkage was replaced with non standard parts, or the RoW Cabs (European) have different linkage coming off the transmission.

Thanks for any help,

Thunder Denton

None of that stuff is readily obvious to me, and it also looks like you have an aftermarket transmission cooler too?

I concur with Wayne.

I guess the more important question is what are you missing now that everything is back together?

somebody just threw that stuff in the box to mess with you.

350HP930,

I hope all I am missing is the linkage rod (which I ordered today after I saw Wayne’s reply) and the plastic cover the goes over the fuel filter area (still don't know the part number for that).

I just hope the pelican part number for the linkage rod (C423-043-00) will fit unmodified. If Wayne is correct about the aftermarket transmission cooler than I may have to make modifications to the linkage rod to make it fit (which may be why I have a partial linkage rod that does not appear in my books).

The plastic cover that fits over the fuel filter area does not need to be there to allow me to start and run the car. I will keep looking for it, but will not allow that to keep me from running the car (breaking it in).

I love this site. It has all the parts and all the helpful people with experience needed to keep one from making mistakes or to correct mistakes after they have been made.

It has been 18 years since I turned a wrench on Porsches (first summer job out of high school) and I can not express how much fun and agony I have had during this rebuild.

Wayne,

Your books and site helped me get the parts and do the rebuild well. I just hope that I used the correct mark for TDC (I read some post yesterday that made me question what I did) when setting the cam timing on the left cam. The books talk about Z1, but my flywheel does not have Z1 on the flywheel, so I am not sure what mark I used now (it has been two months since I did this). I reread the entries for this in your book, but still do not know what mark I chose to use.

My car has the two marks close to each other with the first one being 5% before TDC (this was in the post that I read). I think I may have used the first marking (God I hope not). You may want to add some explanatory information to keep us fools from screwing up the cam (and valve) timing.

My friend, who I had worked for 18 years ago, did the valve adjustments while I was cleaning parts, but he did not see me do the cam timing since I did that when he was with his paying customers. I am hoping I don't have to tear the top part of the engine down again.

Thanks everyone,

Thunder

Hell, my car has been missing the plastic cover for the electronics and fuel filter area since I owned it. ;)

thunderdenton 04-10-2004 08:22 AM

I wasn't going to admit it (you just gave me the courage), but if I can not find the part easily and cheap I will be not be replacing that cover.

I hope it is still in shop close to Austin (Buchanan Dam). I know I took it off there.

It helps keep dirt and water off that stuff but chances are your car won't see much of either

John,

I thought about those parts being a joke (nice helpful friends I have had during this rebuild), but I pulled off that linkage from the transmission so I know it was there. My friends thought it was really funny to hid parts from me, and I would bet two of those bolts were parts they added!

Tony,

I will be my daily driver. I talked my wife into allowing me to get the 20 year old Porshe because I had once worked on them. Sold the 2000 BMW and bought this (18 years and I still love them). Now if I can convince her to let me get another one for when this breaks down...

I will get the the plastic cover if it keeps water out... Should have thought of the water... I just thought of dirt and heat... I can clean the area and plastic doesn’t' really keep the heat out...

What plastic cover? That's how all stock 3.2s look. There is no cover over the fuel filter. The cover over the relays only extends to where it is now. Nothing is missing.

The transmission cooler is on all ROW Carrera 3.2 models.

Well, my 930 was my daily driver up till recently and it rains quite a bit in florida but at least it always had its own little dry cocoon to sleep in each night and it survived.

If you find one thats great but its not like some occasional moisture will destroy that stuff.

Just look at the pics of engine compartments on this site. It looks like few people bother to replace them once they break.

Those parts definately aren't the factory linkage but on the up side you
have a very desirable factory oil cooler on your transmission.
Unfortunately, the first "TDC" mark is the wrong one. (EDIT: You knew that.) Think of the first mark as a "slow down, TDC is approaching" indicator. The second mark is the real TDC mark.
