oil pump

hello

I'm rebuilding my 2.0l engine and I m' wandering how do you see it 's time to change the oil pump ? Mine was ok before and the pressure was correct for example at 4000 rpm at 190 fahrenheit de pressure was 4.5-5 bar . Do you think it 's better to put a new oil pump 76' later style ?
thanks

A 76 or later pump I belive is the prefered one IF you have had the oil bypass mod done since it has a larger pressure side and a smaller scavange side (doesnt' need the scavange as much). I've put one of these pumps in my 2.4L motor.

In oil pressure? I can't say yet since the motor is in it's final stages of reinstallation.

yes ok , if I replace it, it seems a good solution , but how do you see if your old pump is not ok ? I saw in the wayne's book some explanation but trough yours experiences , do you change your pump even it was (or it seems ) a good one ?

I can't really say actually. All I've seen are ones people said are "good" except for obvious things. My old pump injested some metal so it was bad and I pulled apart one shortblock that the pump had "frozen" it was really sticky and almost binding so that one was out as well. I would look for tight, free moving (not binding or excessive force needed to move the gears) and look for scratching that would indicated large pieces of trash had been sucked through. I can't really say more than that.. others here will know more (like the backlash requirement)

I have a 930 oil pump in my 2.2.. I replaced a perfectly good pump with the 930 pump just to make the oil system as good as it can be...

You should perform the case mods while you have your engine apart...The early oil pump will work just fine..but having everything apart and doing everything one can do to make the engine better, and more long lasting is good..

improving the oil pump is cheap

To assess the condition of your existing oil pump... look in the ports... if there are no obvious marks on the teeth your probably ok.. then rotate the shaft. if it turns freely and evenly you probably good to go..

From a guy with a 2.2 with 930 oil pump cross drilled crank modified center main bearing, and all the appropriate case mods..

The older Oil pumps are just fine. You should inspect the gears for damage and check the Woodruff Key for play. Excessive play can in some instances cause the gear to crack at the stress raiser, so you might want to peen the Key to snug it up on the shaft anf the gear.
Put the gears back on in order and the right direction, I believe the gears are possibly marked by and indentation on the ends.

You don't need a 930 oil pump. That's overkill. If your car is going on the track you need the oil baffle mod to the oil tank. You can have the biggest oil pump in the universe but it's useless if it can't get any oil.

Do a search and you'll see some talk about this important track mod.

I re-installed my 76 pump and see 20 bar for every 1000 revs. Mine idles at 20! The cam oil line restrictors help too.

I think that's supposed to be 20psi or 1.3bar per 1000 RPMS
