Alternator screw up...

Installed a new high output alternator without any problems...or so I thought.

Today I rechecked my work just to be sure and discovered that I had not pushed my fan housing in all the way at the bottom which meant that the crank pulley was rubbing on it...in fact it took of some metal (off the fan housing). This would explain the tightness of the belt even though all six shims were inside. That little voice kept saying "there is something wrong with that..."

This is now corrected as well as the belt tightness (four inside, two outside...totally perfect) but I am concerned that I did damage to the new alternator and the crank. The belt looks okay but I may change that to be sure. Ran the car this way for about 40 miles or so.

Expert opinions?

shouldn't be a problem. lots of housings have crank pulley notches worn into them from past misalignments. with continental brand belts, 2 shims in and 4 out is normal. you must be using something else.

I am getting about .4" deflection at midpoint. I don't know the brand of belt.

Thanks John...I'll sleep a little better tonight. I will see ya in June when I get done moving out there.
