Severe depression sets in...
Just got word from my mech that BOTH my S cams have bad lobes. He does not recommend buildup and regrind due to hardness issues? Anyway, I have not been able to locate any through searches of the classifieds - #'s should be 167 & 168 - if anyone knows of a source I would be most grateful.
Cams are early S setup for MFI (from a 2.2).

Kevin:
I'll "Second" John's suggestion,........ ![]() As long as the bearing surfaces are intact and perfect, Webcam can fix your cams as good as new. If you do this, just be sure to break them in EXACTLY as recommended by them. Start the engine and run it at 2000 RPM for 20 minutes; no idling during that critical time period.

A few months ago EBS had N.O.S. S cams for something like $325 each. -Scott

Any good Porsche mechanic knows that these can be reground and rehardened. He's confusing the cams with the crankshaft. Regrind/weld the cams and think about getting a new mechanic - sounds like he's not completely clued in.
Or better, send your engine to JWW... -Wayne

Elgin Cams south of San Francisco is another good place to get the cam shafts refurbished and reground. They can also change the profile while they're at it if you so desire. Jim

i see the theory behind new cams/new rockers to mate both parts nicely but what if you are using good used cams from a different engine?

If you use good used cams you need to have the used rockers (riding on the original lobes) If they aren,t available then the contact surface of the rockers should be fresh and you break them in again at startup . Cam breakin is at about 2000 rpm for about 20 minutes.

can you just have the contact surfaces polished again? do they have to be hardened?

The rockers can be reconditioned by a machine shop .I presume they polish the surface and check or replace the bushings . This should be done to the existing rockers even if the original cams are repaired(Build up and regrind) unless rockers are removed and replaced on the lobes they were running on already.
