Will stock MFI work with a 2.4 crank in a 2.2e case?
Subject says it all, I didn't see this detail addressed in the archives...
Thinking out loud here (and out my a** too)... the crank changes stroke and compression on the engine, but it wouldn't change the order of events around the valve train or MFI, right? The only thing I can think of is that the engine might want more fuel which could be a problem for the stock MFI? Or am I totally wrong? thanks, Britt, thinking out loud, again. |
If you are changing nothing else (such as the cams), I suspect that the stock MFI will be fine after you readjust it. You're basically making a 2.4E with an S CR and so I believe that you can get sufficient travel from the part throttle adjustment to flow about 8% more fuel across the rev range.

I agree with John, the MFI is still within its range of normal adjustment. If not, you can always use the “shim the aneroid” technique. So long as you keep the heads, cams, throttle bodies, intake stacks, and pump together you generally can increase the displacement and CR by a lot and still have the pump work properly. Another issue you need to consider is the 2.2 pistons were designed to clear your 2.2 case and 2.2 crank. The longer stroke 2.4 crank & rods bring the piston skirt farther out of the bottom of the cylinder and could contact the case. There even could be interference or too close clearance between the cylinder and the crank or rod. Inspect carefully. All of these issues are successfully dealt with by some machining and grinding. Be sure and read Bruce Anderson’s book. Almost everyone you talk to will probably recommend a 7R case. However for a normal street engine (not a track engine) and your case is good, I think this is a reasonably suitable (just not ideal) mod. If you were to include 90-92 mm P&Cs then you must use the later case. Best, Grady |
