The fan/alternator
 

I probably should have checked this before mounting the fan assembly back on the motor. But i'm at the point where i'm ready to mate the trans back to the motor. As i was putting the fan belt on and for the first time i spun the fan by hand, and i heard a ticking sound coming from the fan. I'm going to take it out and use the 101 projects book to take it apart. What typically is the cause of the fan to make such a noise?

Are any fan blades coming in contact with the housing? Did you overtighten the strap? Is there a wire or some other thinger interfering with your alternator?

Have you hammered on the alternator shaft at any point? Driving it backwards into the alternator can make it click.

No, no hammering, don't know if there's a wire in the way, but i'll find out today. The only thing left to do before putting it in is to get some oil, spark plugs, and find out why the fan is ticking. When i took the fan out of the motor during disassembly, i left it exactly the way it was and didn't touch until 3 weeks ago when i put it back in.

It may be hitting the side, but it also may be the natural sound of the brushes in the alternator...

Well there was no wire in the way of the fan, the slight ticking sound is coming from somwhere inside the alternator. I also removed the VR/brushes from the alternator and one of the brushes is seriously cracked. I looked in pelican for the VR, and the one they show pictured for the internally regulated alternator doesn't look exactly like mine. But my alternator is a paris-rhone i'm sure of that, it's written on the side of it. What should i assume, should i just buy the VR that is supposedly for my alternator?

There are different brands of VRs. If PP has the VR it will probably be a correct match. I've had 2 on my alternator (Paris Rhone) one was aluminum and the other was a slotted plastic housing. Check to make sure that the wires from the VR don't kink between the VR Housing and the alternator body. I found that this happened on mine and wore through the insulation and shorted out the VR. I filed a slot with a Dremel cut off wheel on the body. There's a dam of raised aluminum that wore the isulation through and left a carbon spot from the arcing. This is where I filed a slot. In the VR there is a keeper/ holder the wire fits into to keep it off the body. The other VR had spaghetti sheaths (the one that failed). It came with the car/PO.
