stripped fitting in case
In the process of reattaching my cam feed lines I stripped my left side fitting at the case. It's the one that uses the compression fitting. How should I proceed? Helicoil? Time cert? JB weld? Lock tite? or duct tape

This may or may not be of some help:

What sort of pressure do these fittings have to take? I've had a similar thing occur in my rebuild and chose to JB Weld it.... Mistake?
|
Those fittings see pretty significant pressure (same as your oil pressure (100psi max or 7 bar)

John,
Do you have any leaking after the JB weld fix. How bad were your threads damaged? I'm considering either red locktite or JB weld. I just got done rebuilding the engine down to the crank. I'll throw myself off a bridge if I have to split the case to machine this for a fix. |
find a longer fitting, and tap the hole a bit deeper. you would have to deal with getting the chips cleaned out, as the bore joins up with the bore for the case thru-bolt. there's still some unused threads below the damaged ones, and room to add a few more. i found a fitting here that's about 10mm longer than the stock one, but i can't think of what application it was used in. i can't seem to post pics like i used to, as they just post [url], etc. no image.

TEST:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/image...er_pelican.JPG John - works okay for me. Make sure you use the [ i m g ] [ / i m g ] tags... -Wayne |

it doesn't work for me. doing it the same as always, click attach multiple, browse, click my documents, click on the document i want, upload, it appears on the message i write, submit, but posts like above. |

I think the problem is either the space or the parentheses in the picture file name. I'll have to remember this trick john. |
how did you get the pic? anyway, the fitting is the same as the short one, but longer. it has a cross drilling that wouldn't matter in this application, and probably is a tad too long, so you would have to trim to length so it doesn't hit the thru-bolt. then it's a matter of how to get all the chips out. hmmmm.

Ted, my problem was the plug below the right side cam oil line fitting (17mm threaded plug). As my engine is on a stand, I rotated it until the thread chips fell away, and then flushed with carb cleaner. I had "some" grip against the remaining threads, but could only safely pull around 10 foot pounds. So I've loaded the area with JB, screwed in the plug and then brushed JB all around the exterior of the plug. I'm happy that the area was very clean and free of grease, but I am worried about the continual high pressure this area will endure.
Perhaps it might be smarter to have a machinist turn me a new plug with deeper thread (there is certainly more thread deeper in) and then cross drill the plug for oil flow like the one in JWW's picture? |
The 35 NM torque spec on this adapter seems way to high for a mag case to me. It always "feels" like it will strip if you go that high. I always stop short and watch it for leaks.
John, your picture was already on the pelican server, it's just the link that would not work. I renamed the file and it worked fine. Thanks for all the great advise; all us novices really appreciate you experience and wisdom. So, can you put a 911 engine in a bus? (Type 2 RSR?) |
