Cannot pull heat exchanger from heads
Hi all
I've now stripped my motor, and due to the fact that I could not remove the exhaust (all the nuts were lilttle brown rust blobs) and there was no way I could get them off. I then removed the heads, camtower and heat exchanger as a unit. I was then able to cut off the nuts but now cannot get the heads to separate from the heat exchangers. I don't want to use any force in fear of breaking something. It would seem as if the complete exhaust stud has rusted and now it wont budge. Any tips/suggestions etc greatly appreciated:mad:   Cheers JakesSmileWavy |
Once you cut the nuts at the exhaust ports off you might try to soak the stud area with penetrating oil over night. Also get the cam tower separated from the heads. That way you can remove each head individually from the heat exchanger.
I would try a deadblow hammer or a rubber faced hammer to "convince" the studs to give. Good luck, Ingo |
Get some real rusty fastener liquid and keep soaking it twice a day for a week. That's what I do when I'm only working on a motor on weekends. It doesn't always work but it doesn't hurt either.
A visit to a pro who removes more rusty studs in a month than you and I will in a lifetime might be in order. You'll probably be visiting one if you break the stud anyway.... -Chris |
Oxy torch usually does it real well when you heat everything up in that region...

the nuts might have had a helicoil inside, that's still on the stud, keeping the stud from pulling thru the hole.
