cooling tin mod
i'm supprised after doing a search that there wasn't very much info on the cooling tin mod.
since it's simple and Bruce Anderson and Wayne refrence it in their books as a "must do" I assume everyone is doing it. I just got done doing mine and was just wondering what to expect from the 5 minutes of work it took. my engine was running pretty hot before my rebuild so I won't have a good point of refrence for my improvment. what is your experience with this? |
Did no test to prove other wise but did it.....still runs

It helps - it's a mod done on all the later cars. It will help lower cylinder head temps, which are different than oil temps. There are a few things on your '77 you should do to help with cooling:
- Cooling tin mod - External oil cooler - 11-blade fan - Removal of thermal reactors (a 911SC system is much better and will still pass talipipe smog) -Wayne |
I do sopose it helps..like said, did it , have no proof that it did anything-thats what peo. always want (proof) I am banking on Porshe knowing what they are doing........

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is the "cooling tin mod"? Have done a search but found nothing.
I have had temp problems and by chance I have the engine out of my '76 Carrera 3.0 at the moment, so would be keen to know what this is all about. Note, I have fitted an 11 blade fan and am in the process of fitting a 28-bar oil cooler. The reason that the engine is out is that I have some disturbing oil leaks, most worrying being the No.8 bearing which someone has 'sealed' up previously using liquid metal or similar. At this point, looks like I will be doing a full rebuild (might as well if I have to split the case to fix the leak huh?), so you guys will probably be hearing a lot more fom me over the coming weeks. |
See page 81 of the Engine Rebuild book. Porsche made a change in March 1977 to the cooling tin to allow more air to reach the cylinders. The old tin can be modified - see the dimensions in the book...
