I purchase the car from a gentleman on Hilton Head Island, drove it to Dallas with no problems. I don't think it had the noise before I parked it and did a cosmetic refresh on it. I also had the Zeniths rebuild and put a new S distributor on it. It sat for seven months and sound bad when I started it to take it to the shop for tuning. Once when I put the carbs on I accidently started it with too much oil in it and it backed up the oil breather hose. Could that have done something?

Problem Solved
Thanks to everyone for your input and suggestions. The final resolution of my problem was favorable and I am happily motoring around DFW in my 71 Targa. Here is the deal:
My engine DID NOT need a rebuild. What it needed was a Porsche technician familiar with the early 911's. The sound from the engine was a result of the distributor being installed 180 degrees out of time, the Motor Meister rebuilt Zeniths not having correct washers under the needles for the floats, the carbs needing syncronization, and the valves needing adjustment. Ed Mayo, The PCA tech advisor for the early 911's, made the save and got my freshly restored T totaly dialed in. I had no idea a T could run so strong. I have learned my lesson. There is a big difference between a generic "german" repair shop and a shop that does nothing but Porsche. I am a happy SOB. |
Glad to hear it worked out well. Ed Mayo is the best. If he wasn't 1000 mils away, he'd still be doing my car.
