Rewiring for race car
I am going to be re-wiring a 911SC for race car use. All original components will be replaced and or updated at some point. For now, I want to remove the factory wiring harnesses and fuse/relay panels and strip out all components that are not needed for racing. (keeping gauges for now)
Plans so far include 1)use of TXL wire for engine and non-engine areas of the car, 2) moderization of the fuse panel (possibly to breakers) and relocation to inside cockpit, 3) move battery rearward to the smugglers box to move it away from bumper in case of crash, 4) installation of a battery cutoff switch to PCA standards. I need to make sure no wiring is in a crumple zone. Is it safe to say that if I run wire in the same places as factory, it will be safe, or are the additional locations to avoid? Any other feedback on the above plans? I don't anticipate the work to be too difficult, but significant planning will be invoved. Thanks in advance for any advice form those who have done this before!

There is a great thread on this on either the Technical forum or the Race forum, can't remember. But one of the posters in the thread did just what are you thinking about and posted lots of great pics too!
Cheers

I think I saw a recent one, Jeff, where I posted but got no response. I am kind of looking for more details now. His setup did look pretty cnice though.
I placed this thread in the wrong forum too - should be in the 911 tech forum. Sorry.

Been there... Done that! PO had butchered original harness. Was not worth saving since it was over 30 yrs old. I now have a reliable, light, modern system.
I used a Painless wiring harness kit for street/track with an 8 switch panel. Car is still road legal, but saved 14#s while doing it. I moved the battery to smuggler's hole, fuses were placed inside by foot well, added E-switch. Spliced OEM harness by starter since I wanted to reuse 14 pin for easy eng removal and new harness was designed for front cars (too short, but workable). Reused OEM relays for ancillary stuff (crankfire, electric heaters, fuel pump, etc) You need to crimp and/or solder and heat shrink all connections. Not for the faint of heart! You better know how to read a wiring diagram, use a voltmeter and troubleshoot electrical systems. Be prepared to know the diagrams like the back of your hand. Start studying now! By the time you get done, you'll know all the color wiring that Porsche used. Just checked my spreadsheet... Spent over 50 hrs getting it all done and easily another 50+ reading up on the manual and planning... You better be methodical and be able to break it apart into logical sections. It is going to take a while and could be frustrating at times... My total hrs was 360 for the whole car and another 100 for the engine... I would suggest creating a new wiring diagram with new colors/old connections to help in future troubleshooting. I have a binder with all that info. Was it worth it? You bet!! But then again, I've done 3 engine rebuilds and just finished a 915 and been taking things apart and putting them back together all my life. Pictures included... Good Luck!
