Caliper Assistance: Cam Timing
I borrowed a Caliper to set timing on my cams. I think I've got it right but I need to get confirmation from the experts.
The caliper is 0.01 - 20 mm It has an outside dial that goes from 0 to 99 It has an inside (seperate) dial that goes from 0 - 20 One trip around the outside moves the inside dial to 1, two trips moves it to 2, etc. In timing my cams (911 SC stock), the intake valve stroke in overlapping TDC with 0.1 mm valve clearance should be set between 0.9 mm and 1.1 mm. So, am I correct that one turn around on the outside dial is exactly 1 mm and this is the point where the pulley should be pointing to Z1? I'm overthinking this I know but it's late and I want to verify before I continue. While I'm at it, there seems like a couple of positions that the pin could go into between 0.9 mm and 1.1 mm. Is this the case? I didn't try it but it just seems like there could be. I set the cams for 1.0 mm on the button. Thoughts? Michael |
you're on the right track, but it would be a whole lot easier, and steadier if you used a dial gauge and holder.you're correct about the pin holes also. there's even a bit of slop in each hole to fine tune the adjustment.

Thank you.
And yes, I'm using the z-block. Should have mentioned it in the original post. It just seems like the difference between 0.9 and 1.1 is at least one adjustment of the pin. Michael |
