Cracked Crankshafts?

What is the danger in re-using a cracked crankshaft? i.e. what could happen if you did?

Don't get me wrong, I would never re-use my cracked Crank, I just wanted to know what the effects could be.

Another thing, what would cause the cracking in the first place? Is it heat?

My engine ran a bearing and the crank tested positive for cracks so I was just wondering if the cracks were there for the last 10000 miles?

Any thoughts

cheers Jakes

p.s. Moderators if this is meant to be in the normal forum, feel free to move it

As long as they were just minor cracks I doubt that you would notice any outward symptoms or issues. The problem is that small cracks grow into big cracks and big cracks grow into breaks. If you're crankshaft breaks you will have major problems and a pile of expensive metal parts that used to be a motor.
