964 heads on a 3.0?
There is a smoked 964 engine on ebay that is being parted right now due to a chain tensioner failure. I thought they had figured out the chain tensioner thing by '84, but anyway. In the ads the seller mentions upgrading 3.0 and 3.2 engines with some of the 964 parts.
Is it possible to use the 964 heads with say 98mm P&Cs on a type 930 case from a 3.0 or a 3.2? Is the stud spacing even the same? I didnt think that the 964 and type 930 engines were that similar or interchangeable. TIA |
The intake studs are different. The pre-964 cars had 2 8mm studs and the 964 has 3 6mm ones.

Ok, I looked at the pics. I didnt realize that about the intake studs. So, its definitely not a direct bolt on for a 3.0 or 3.2 with stock induction.
Ive got carbs and know PMO has a carb setup for a 3.6 so they should have something that could make it work. What about the head stud spacing? Same as a 3.0? Im trying to figure out if I can run these on my 3.2 short stroke rebuild since they already have the machine work for the twin plugs and bigger valves and ports than the stock SC heads currently on the motor. Any thoughts? |
I can take pics and measurements. I think mouth of the intake ports is the same (3.2 vs 964), about 40.5mm I think.
EDIT: I just measured 964 = 3.2 = ~41.3mm The Ebay ad lists a phone number that looks like a business [(678) 773 5800]. I wonder if it is PAP or whatever they call themselves now. Aren't they in Georgia also? The prices seem kinda high for those heads (only 4 good ones). -Chris |
Thanks Chris! Are you rebuilding a 3.6 right now?
I dont think its PAP. I bought a set of spring plates from them last year, I think there seller name is 'germanautodismantlers'. They didnt exactly give me a warm fuzzy. I agree on the price. It just got me thinking. I doubt it's possible, someone here would have done it already. I want to go to twin plugs and I have the later small port SC heads on my motor. If this will work and wont screw the CR up I may start looking for a set of these heads instead of doing all the machine work on mine. Henry, any thoughts on this? Once I get everything together, its getting strapped to pallet and sent to your shop :) |
Yes I'm doing a 964 and a 3.2 (3.4) at the same time. I was building up my 3.4 when I got stalled by those sucky blue through bolt O-rings, so I'm working on the 3.6 until I get new O-rings.
"germanautodismantlers" was PAP before PAP "moved" to someplace else. Do a search. Too bad it's those guys, I could use some little things but I won't deal with those guys again. -Chris |
The cylinder head stud spacing on a 3.6 is totally different than that on the 3.0/3.2/3.3 - won't fit.
You can fit a 3.6 cylinder onto a 3.0/3.2/3.3 engine if you elongate the holes in the 3.6 cylinder... -Wayne |
Looking at the germanautodismantlers Ebay ad I see that they don't accept credit cards. That makes sense - if you are going to rip people off you don't want them paying by credit card.

Thanks Wayne! oh well. I guess I'll start budgetting for the porting and twin plug costs on my SC heads. |
