Checking crank / intermediate shaft for play?

Looking for opinions from the rebuild gurus here.

Is there any value to assembling the bottom end without case sealant for the purpose of checking the free rotation of the crank and intermediate shaft? With lubricated bearings, of course and probably without chains.

Or am I just being paranoid? Could it possibly damage anything doing so?

Thanks for the advice - I am planning on buttoning up the bottom half this evening. Oh - the case in question is a 2,2l mag case if it makes a difference.

Thanks!
