912 turbo...

can you turbo an opposed 4-banger....or will the motor deconstruct itself...anybody done this before?

Jim Sims 06-21-2004 10:21 AM

I seem to recall the crankshafts (same as 356C?) already had a limited fatigue life that was often reached (they break) during normal service so increasing the loads with a turbo boost is likely to just cause the crank to fail even sooner. Repost your question on the the 356 forum and you may receive a more informed answer. Jim

Lars, what are you up to? They turbo the flat 4 VWs all the time. Depenging on how much boost you run will determine the longevity. But, it's been done many, many times before.

Geez...Chris....the RS is soooo close. and I'm starting to "jones" fo another project. Everybody has already done the "wolf in sheeps clothing" thing...putting 911 motors in earlier 912s....I've got a source for a decent 912 with a couple motors....and I was just thinking....I wonder what kind of bhp numbers you can get going turbo...either VW or 912 motor? That 912R in Excellence a few months back.. has me curious....then there is always that making a 4 banger out of a six....in California....some shop....getting 150hp...it's a Greek name...like Poulopolous

How 'bout a turbo 3.3 in that 912 instead? There'll be a project for you. If you're going to go about getting yourself infected with turbo-fever, do it on something that'll make some real HP.

While I'm sure the boosted 912 can be done, I suspect you'll be happier with something even bigger.

Jim is right - the 912E / 914 / Vanagon VW Type IV motor is a much better candidate for turbo charging. Good 912 cranks are getting harder and harder to find these days...

This is basically a cross-post to the technical forum, unfortunately. there it's called "at least it's not a v8 question".

just a little goofy when you read almost the same thread again.

yeah you're right....I couldn't figure out how to move the thread....and someone suggested that this is the better forum....and that turned out to be correct. I'm still curious how much bhp type IV motor can produce w/ a turbo ....kind of a hp per $ question. And hey, wait a minute....you should be working not surfing the Pelican threads anyways!!

absolutely it is. with 2400cc, lots of aftermarket parts, 300hp would not be out of the question. might cost as much as a 930 motor though...
