After what I thought was a great top end rebuild, and after 8 track days, I have noticed that the area around the clutch helper spring/bottom of transmission is wet with oil
![]() The strange thing also is that I don't even get a drop of oil on the ground even after parking it for a week, so I deduced it to be a leak under pressure only. The first thing that came to mind is the main seal... but then I haven't touched the bottom end and is "in front" of the seal - how can oil be blown in tha tdirection at speed? I'm looking for suggestions as to how to diagnose this without taking the engine out again. Any help would be appreciated. thanks..

at least it wont rust... just kidding..You could use some brake clean(flamable make sure it's dry before starting) and/or degreaser on it to find the leak from dry. I'm not sure the opinion on the oil leak dye but it works well on other vehicles. Just have a shop throw an ultraviolet light on it after it has run a for a few cycles and had a chance to leak some more. Bad thing about leaks is they always leak down and eventually start to look like theyre coming from the bottom. That's why it's good to really clean it.

Is the fill plug to the transmission tightened down?

Hi David,
It did cross my mind about transmission fluid, but those are indeed (sadly) motor oil ![]()

Look at the top rear, if you can even see that in your car. If you can't see anything, then look in the little 'notch' on the bottom of the trans to engine mating. See if your flywheel looks wet. If it does, there's a good chance it's the rear seal. But honestly, if you don't remove your engine, you'll likely never know. Even if you do remove it, the diagnosis might not be clear. IMHO, don't worry about it. What you're talking about is an insignificant amount, as long as it doesn't drip onto exhaust. Just monitor your fluids, and make sure they don't drop.
