Any 2.0 owners out there who built a Short-Stroke 3.2L ?
Hi,
I asked Wayne what would be his pick for rebuilding my 1968L engine, and he suggested the "Short-Stroke 3.2L" engine mentioned in his book on 911 Engine Rebuilds...... I like my 901 tranny and he said it would bolt right on......... Anyway, anyone out there with an early 911 featuring this configuration? SvK |
Ive got one, but its on a pallet right now. Ive never heard anyone say anyhting bad about the engine. Your car is smaller and lighter than most so it should be a real hoot to drive when done
Mine is setup with Webers. I have not confirmed a compression ratio, which pistons it was built with, or the cam. Im going to send it to Henry at Supertec to be refreshed. Unless you build it on a early turbo casewith a 2.7 6 bolt crank you will probably need an adapter to hook it up to your 901. I think you can get the adpater from Patrick MotorSports. The 914 gang will know for sure. Good luck! |
Thanx Shuie......
Ok......where do I buy all the parts...... Pistons Heads Cams SvK |
I think Pelican sells everything you will need. Read Wayne's book a few times. Read Bruce Anderson's book a few times as well. They both document this engine.
Start with a rebuildable 3.0 core. Preferably a '78 or '79 SC motor since it has the bigger ports on the heads. There are several different sets of 98mm P&Cs. Call (Andial) someone who really knows exactly which set of pistons and cylinders you need. RSR, and Max-Moritz P&Cs are not the same thing. They come in different compression ratios as well but try to keep everything under 10:1 unless you have budgetted for twin ignition. What induction? CIS will probably be the easiest since it will come with the core motor. If you want to go to carbs, a decent set of Webers will cost you $1k. PMO's will cost you $3k. Budget $3k-5k and some more money for extra machine work on your heads if you want MFI. Just make sure you have all of the details hammered out before you start ordering P&Cs or any other parts. Run a 20/21 or a 964 cam if you keep the CIS induction. Run something like a GE80 with carbs or MFI. How is your oil cooling? If you dont have a good external cooler, budget for one. Good luck! |
Shuie,
Excuse my ignorance...... But with this engine my 1968 911L would do 0 to 60 in what? I know weight is a big factor (my seats are Recaro Sport Seats) just approximately..... SvK |
Sell your engine and transmission and buy 3.2 Carrera drivetrain to slot in. It's much less fuss and cheaper too. 901 tranny is too weak and must go anyway.
|
The early turbo case, or 76-77 3.0L carrera is the best place to start. I've got one in the shop. Very reliable and revs TO THE MOON.
|
I have a 3.2 bolted to a 914 (901) tranny....bolts right up... build the most engine you can afford to..
|
Svon- do a search on my fellow countryman CamB's 69T-to-fire-breathing short stroke 3.2 build for some inspiration. He did it on a narrow body too, so all due respect.
He's been quiet lately (cos I think he's too scared to drive it ;) ) A search will reveal all his worries and answers. |
Thanx Matt,
SvK |

We have a great selection of used air cooled 911 based engine and transmission parts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1088873886.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1088873906.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1088873918.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1088873932.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1088873947.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1088873963.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1088873973.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1088873985.jpg |
Damn Henry. And I thought Dave White had a big stash of air cooled porsche stuff.

I second that. 901 is very robust, except for first gear. The shift patern is better too.
|
I just know that 901 has lower torque rating than 915 which itself twists it's case and wears down quickly when subjected to 930 torque.
Wevo Hayden can fill on this. |
