Let the games begin...

Engine pulled... torn apart in 6 hours... not bad for a rookie, first timer!!!

The story.

3.0 unknown condition. Possible valve suck, maybe just a ring failure.

Findings!!! NO valve suck, reasonable ring gaps, good piston wear. Very good bearings overall, excellent crank.

The rebuild will consist of 3.2 98mm high compression P&C's, new bearings etc... The usual stuff. I'm very excited about the fact that overall the motor is in really good shape.

The one concern is the bearings in the motor are labled as "02's" not "00's" we'll need to do some measuring to see just what the situation is with the crank/case.

One thing, it's great to have access to tools and 40 yrs of Porsche motor rebuilding with my mechanic. Although I did all the work, he walked me through and helped with the whole process. Can't wait to start getting it all back together!!!

Some pics.

geof33,
Looks like you are going to have some fun. There is nothing quite like the feeling you will have when you put everything back together and fire it up for the first time. That baby will truly be yours forever after.
But first into the innards and the learning process. Enjoy!

You disassembled your engine incorrectly, you're supposed to take weeks to do it and spend hours marvelling at the German engineering. :)

Or maybe that was just my method.

That all looks strangely familliar. It does sound like fun though. Doing any other mods other than the 3.2's?

964 cams... I'm keeping the CIS for now as I can't smog it anyother way except EFI... $$$$

I'm trying to keep to a rather tight budget... but who knows.

One other mod is a "custom" trans. Beginning with a 73 7:31 trans with the 3rd and 4th gears from my 82 trans.

We are hoping to get some really good ponies out of this as we will be running a high CR. Here at altitude a high CR is nec to get the most from the motor. The probem is, the engine won't be good for low altitude as I'm not twin plugging it.

Eventually the engine will get some hot cams, twin plugs and PMO's...
