What engine case do I have?

How do I find out what type of engine case I have? I.e. is it alu or mag or if it’s a 7R etc.

It's a 1972 2.4E engine with MFI, engine number is 911 52 6220 655

I’m in the planning stages of an engine upgrade but would really like to keep the case for financial reasons. Can an early case by strenghtned etc for higher compression running?

BURN-BROS 07-14-2004 05:55 AM

Luke, there is another set of numbers on the case by the oil return tubes. These are the casting #s. If it is indeed original then it shiuld be mag.

Luke Hudson 07-14-2004 09:18 AM

the numbers under there say:

901 105 111 0R

so what do you think?

BURN-BROS 07-14-2004 09:27 AM

0R should be early alloy case. Someone back me up here. If it is you have the base to make a real screamer!

Luke Hudson 07-14-2004 09:28 AM

please, someone back him up!!;)

The number you have listed is on the cam tower.
We are looking for the number on the engine case. [see picture]
Another way to tell 2.0 from mag case is the studs on the rear of the case. 2 studs on 2.0 aluminum case, 3 studs on the mag case. This case is a 2.0 aluminum case.

Luke, did you find the #s? Good call Henry, so what vitamins are you taking for your mental dexterity? :)

andyjboy 07-17-2004 01:25 AM

Luke - that engine type no. (911/52) & serial no. indicate that it's a '72 2.4E mag case (probably the original ?).

These won't be 7R cases since they weren't introduced until '73 & the only engine of less than 2.7 litres to use 7R cases was the '73.5 2.4T with CIS (engine type no.911/91 or 911/96).

The casting numbers are embossed (low down) onto the sides of the cases (between the oil return tubes) viewable from under the engine.

This statement is not quite accurate. Because Porsche was such a small company back then, they were very inconsistent with product continuity.
The truth is that almost any engine model assembled mid year 73 could have a 7R case. That means 2.4 T, 2.4 E, 2.4 S, 2.7 RS but not a 2.8 RSR.
The pictures tell the story.
Here's a 73 E # 6232068, 911/52 that we just built for a customer to 2.7 with solex cams.

Thanks, Henry.

That's what I like about this board - you can learn something new each time you visit.

thanks guys, I'll get the case number and post it tonight, I was struggling with elecrical gremlins all this weekend and didn't get around to looking.

Jim Richards 07-19-2004 11:54 AM

FYI, my Jan 1973 production '73 2.4E engine has a 7R case.

Luke Hudson 07-19-2004 11:49 PM

my case numbers are:

911.101.101.4R

911.101.102.3R

a different number on each side, does this make it a mag case then?

Jim Richards 07-20-2004 03:27 AM

Luke, I think it was common to have different version numbers for your case halves. Maybe during the model year they updated something that only effected one side of the case.

Your's is magnesium.

Thread hijack alert:
So Henry, tell me about that 2.7+Solex+MFI engine.

Henry Schmidt 07-20-2004 06:54 AM

The customer is a Porsche enthusiast with many cars in his collection. He has a hot rod [RS replica with twin plug, 2.8 slide valve engine and all the bells and whistles] so for this car he was looking for a little more derivability. As I have stated many times on the BB, the solex cam lies somewhere between "E" and "S" and from my experience is the best street cam for a smaller engine.
This engine has euro spec 2.7 Ps & Cs ( 8.5 to 1) 38 mm intake port matched to 38 mm butterfly housings on the MFI. As I have also stated in various places on the BB, the 2.4 "E" MFI pump will easily adjust to function well with this engine configuration. The exhaust is SSI, the muffler is a twin in -twin out 3 in Borla.
We also did a cosmetic restoration of the engine compartment. The car started out brown got painted white but the engine compartment was painted black as are so many of these older cars. This is one of the few body cosmetic restorations we offer. We do this so our work is displayed in the best possible light.

Nice work!

Jim Richards 07-20-2004 08:55 AM

Oh Henry, that looks nice. How close would HP and torque be to the standard 2.7RS?

Henry Schmidt 07-20-2004 11:30 AM

Thanks guys.
Better low end with simmilar top end. When it is installed I'll try to get some dyno RWHP reading. That is if time permmits.

Jim Richards 07-20-2004 11:32 AM

Thanks for the info, Henry.

Maybe we should install that bad boy in my 73E and I'll give you a butt-dyno report. ;)
