3.6/ 993 experts?????

I have posted a few times and made call to a few engine builders without sucess. What is the finish on the 993 chain cases? If I wanted to restore the tired "black" finish prior to a rebuild....who can do this? Can they be powder coated?

I know folks that have powdercoated the covers. I don't know about the cases. But I think It shouldn't be a problem as long as you mask off the oil galleys and the gasket surfaces properly. As far as I know they are made from Magnesium and the finish is corroded blackened magnesium :) Sorry, I really don't know what the finish is.

Thank you. It's amazing to me that this is such a mystery. The finish looks almost like a composite type of finish applied over the metal substrate.

Okay but don't laugh, We restore the finish on Hewland Gear Boxes with a Map gas torch and black BBQ paint.
The finish on the Porsche is a result of Pickling at the end of the casting process, I know of no place to redo this process.

Best Regards

That sounds like a good idea. I guess that I should media blast the piece and then "pickle" the piece with a torch and paint. I guess that I could still powder coat as well.
Thanks.

Rick,
ASC (American Stripping Co.) in Manassas did great work on my engine tin, valve covers, fan and housing when I rebuilt. Check out the pics in the Dorkiphus gallery under Ted Thomas engine drop.

I think the covers are fiber reinforced plastic. I know that some powdercoaters can powdercoat mdf(wood) but it is special. Check around to see if they could do them.

The plot thickens. What about the cases? If they are plastic, I ought to be able to blast them with a soft media and get them to look new.

Only the covers are plastic. The cases are Magnesium alloy. Ryan had the covers on the 964 3.6 engine powdercoated.
