Woodruff Key Removal?
I don't know what's different about this engine, but upon teardown, the woodruff keys did NOT want to come off. Finally got one off, but the other is still on it! Never seen this before... Any suggestions? I've already tried a crowbar :mad:

You need slight impact, creating vibration, not steady force. A chisel and a small hammer should break it loose. A bit of heat won't hurt either, but dose it carefully.

crank or cam key? generally you just use a hammer and punch. on the cam key, just a light tap on the end rocks it out of the slot. on the crank key, punch one end downward into the keyway, which raises the other end. keep tapping and it will roll right out of the keyway, which has a rounded bottom just like the key.

Cam key, sorry. I've torn down several 911 engines but this one just seems to be glued in or something, it's really a PITA! With heat, you mean heat the key, right? Is propane hot enough?

Propane will do. I'd heat the key, just to unsettle things and get rid of any epoxy (loctite) that some clown may have smeared in there. I'd leave the heat off the cam itself. Of course you need to wait for things to cool down before you try again.
You would have to heat the cam to make the hole bigger, but I'd be shy about that. Getting that to a reasonable temperature may change the material properties... George |
Grab tightly with some diagonal cutters, then rock the jaws to lever the key off. If needed, replace the key.

I had to destroy my key on 123 bank. Got a replacement. I used a punch and hammer. Be careful not to ding the washers.
