Intake studs question
I'm converting my 930 to EFI and am using a 3.2 carrera intake.
So that means I'm using the 3.2 carrera intake studs on my 930 heads. On the studs, there is one end that has a shorter threaded end than the other. Which end goes into the heads, the one with the longer or shorter threads? It would seem like the shorter end would go into the heads, but tonight the longer end seemed to thread into the head much easier. Which way? Brian |
Measure the depth of the hole. A stud is usually designed to bottom out.

If you have the factory 3.2 intake stud, the short end is installed in the head. The 3.2 intake has an insulator block and 2 gaskets that go on the stud under the manifold. The factory used an allen barrel nut similar to the cam housing nuts to hold this manifold on. If you plan on using the nuts there is a very thick 8mm washer that goes under the nut.
I'm wondering why you did not use 3.2 heads in this conversion? Every conversion of this type that we've done or seen used 3.2 heads. The have a shorter boss and much larger ports to match the 3.2 intake. |
I ported out my 930 heads to match the intake.

Brian,
You will find like I did that there is a gasket problem. The carrera gaskets will cause a leak on the outside edge. Welding and then grinding is the preferred method to fix this. I hope you are still in a position to do the machining! I am going to right a book on my experiences with the EFI/carrera intake mods that I did. Good luck! Norm |
Norm, did you try any sealants on the heads to get them to seal? Any other ideas out there? I also ported my 930 heads for my EFI conversion. I just shipped the heads to EBS for the valve job, I guess I could talk to them about welding up the ports and remachining or have them ship them back before the valve job for me to do it. Or I could leave it the way it is and hope for the best.

PMO offers gaskets and spacer blocks that will cure your problem, no welding. There is a difference between the turbo and Carrera heads at the intake port. The Carrera intake flange is 14 mm tall and turbo are 21 mm tall. You need the spacer block to keep the heat out of the injectors. This whole set up will end up taller but it will work.
Good luck |
My heads are already ported to the Carrera spacer, so should I look at getting the OD of the ports welded?
Another thought, how about epoxying the Carrera spacers to the 930 heads for a good seal? |
What you're talking about will work.
Bearing in mind that I would have used 3.2 heads, what I would do in your situation is use ThreeBond 1104 and PMO spacers and you're good to go. No welding necassary. |
What's different between the PMO spacers and the Carrera spacers?
