2.7 Repair or Rebuild
Hi Guys,
I removed the engine from my recently purchased 74 911S. It had a severe oil leak which I have identified as coming from the oil thermostat O-ring and oil cooler gaskets. I have replaced both but while I had the engine on the stand yesterday I had it up-side-down for a bit and when I turned it over there seemed to be oil seeping from around the thermostat. Can the thermostat itself go bad and leak oil or is the O-ring the only places for it to come out or is it just cause I had it up-side-down? Obviously, before I put it back in the car I want to be sure I've got the leak problem solved. Thanks...

99% sure the stat will never go as they are built more then well......so it must be the "o" ring.....lube it b4 install/ rebuild the 2.7 rather then all the $$$ in a used 3.0 eng.

Oil Thermostats can go bad and can leak out of the top if they are the adjustable kind. Not common but can happen. I'm not sure how to check the leak part other than looking at it, but if you want to check its functionality do a search, there is a thread on how to test them in boiling water. It's easy especially when the engine is out.

Okay, now you have me curious. How would I know if it was the adjustable thermostat?

Some have a set screw and a nut on top, some are solid. The ones with a nut are adjustable.
This is an adjustable one: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/engine/1-1-2-52.jpg

Thanks Pat,
I have a solid one so I will assume that all the rotating of the engine on the stand let some oil seep into the upper half and out on to the case. I had already installed the new o-ring and it was a snug fit going in with the new ring.

the solid ones so rarly go bad....if you take one apart you will see why,,Just a leson in how well stuff can be made...the waxy stuff melts, expands and opens the door.......pure and simple
