....never mind what I went through to get to this point....it sucked...but I now have the option of sourcing a running 3.2 to bolt up to my '73 RS clone, or waiting a few weeks and having one built. A couple "pelicanites" have offered to dig into their parts piles and build on a 3.2 case....vs a 3.0 case. I've read through Waynes top engine picks.... and have come up with some ideas....trying to get 225-250 hp with off-the-shelf parts....without killing me $$$-wise. I can't run carbs as I live at 8100 ft and work at 5000 ft. So...before I commit...I'd like some input. In answer to the question..."why don't you do it yourself"...simple answer is...I'm going to, next time. I have a beautiful completed RS conversion with it's butt-end up in the air waiting for a motor...it deserves a motor...one that runs. I have a '76 2.7 targa that will be the next backdate and rebuild the motor project:D

Stock 3.2, but bump the compression by cutting the heads (it will counter your altitude problem) and get a chip and use your early exhaust...

speedo, on the altitude thing, If you are a little computer geeky you might consider looking at tbitz' CIS->EFI kit, _especially_ if you have a "long block" engine but not all of the CIS parts, because in that case you might be able to do CIS->EFI for not that much more than full CIS. If you aren't or don't want to worry about that right now, just use regular CIS.

I recommend SUPERTEC too based on everything I've heard, and Henry's great knowledge that he shares here. "fintstone" in Albequerque had an engine built by SUPERTEC and he is very happy, along with some others on this board.

Henry will have lots of ideas on possible engine configurations and costs, too. I hear he is very helpful on the phone :D

I guess to push Lars' question a little further... He has no engine to build off (don't ask why, you'll make him cry). I think he's asking an opinion as to whether he should just buy 3.2, slap it in there, or... cost-wise how much further back will it set him to have something a little hotter built? And even if it is a little more expensive, what more will it get him both in terms of reliability and performance.

For example, if he buys a good, used 3.2 it'll cost him $x. If he has a 3.2 short stroke, or even a 3.4 built, what will it cost him and how much better might it be? However it works, I suspect buying a 3.2 and then rebuilding it/cutting heads etc, will be more expensive than just calling Henry up and saying "set me up."

However it works, a nice 3.2 in that car will be fun!

Check with Henry to see what some of the options cost. If a fresh engine is too much $ for you, I would say try to buy a good used 3.0 or 3.2 with a service history, if possible. put it in the car and drive it and worry about a rebuild/performance later.

Henry found the core for my 3.0 and built it for me. Pretty seamless process and he was certainly a better judge and had better sources for cores than I do. I have a similar altitude problem, but my car is plenty competent at either extreme.

...currently have a few options available to me...a couple 3.2s...with or witout the MAF and chip...a stock 3.2...a euro'76 3.0, a euro 3.2 and a short stroke 3.2 rebuild. Bottom line, we're talking $ here. It starts at 4k and just accelerates. I can dig "deep" and end up with a fresh rebuild on a short-stroke 3.2....or back off the need for hp and save several $ and plug a stock 3.2 into the car....and with the savings, buy the '76 2.7 targa that definitely needs a rebuild...with the difference. If I buy the targa, I plan to do an RS rebuild...and I end up with an extra car too...that I can backdate. Let me make something VERY clear here....1) you guys are great, and I hugely appreciate the support...2)I am not floating in $...3) I do want to do a rebuild....but when I want to, not when I need a motor 4). fortunately I have another '74 that I restored as a driver...so I can be intelligent about my next course of action ( is that a porsche-oxi-moron)? I have a few days to consider my options...which include ...re-finding the owner of the targa to see if he is still good at that price. I'll let the board know whats going to transpire shortly...with some pics. Again, thanks guys.
