Is this cam as trashed as I think it is?
Hello all,
I just finished removing the leftside camshaft from its tower, and this is what I saw: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1093456608.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1093456619.jpg I would say this camshaft is trash. BTW it is a 901.105.183.0R. Anyone else have an opinion? |
I can't really tell from the picture but did the rocker face wear a groove in the cam lobe? If it did, you might want to figure out why before you reuse the cam housing.
|
Glenn,
I'm not planning on reusing these cam housings, but the rocker arm didn't wear a groove. I am more concerned about the pitting on the center lobe in the upper picture, and the lobe on the right in the lower picture. Both areas of pitting are near the outer edge of each lobe. |
I think it can be repaired (weld/regrind) but what are your plans for the motor?
|
I'm planning on a 2.8 RSR type motor, so I wasn't going to reuse these cams anyway.
|
pitting aside, did you notice that the lobes are worn out. check out the ridge on the outer edge where the rocker doesn't touch it. more noticeable on the upper picture.
|
That's what I like about this board - plenty of experts with trained eyes to point out things I wouldn't notice.
Thanks John. The pitting issue is rather moot, then... |
top lobe, bottom picture looks as though it got hot.. Maybe its just the picture that gives is that blue tint?
|
No, you're absolutely right. For some reason that lobe really heated up. I didn't see anything obvious that would have been the cause.
Glad I didn't use this engine before tearing it down! :) |
plugged hole in the spray bar.
